Open to professors, students, and the general public

Under the auspices of the Center for New Questions in Ethics, Technology and Society (CETS), a member of CETS Scientific Committee, Dr. Roberto Wu, Professor of Philosophy and Director of the Graduate Philosophy Program at the Federal University of Santa Catarina, Brazil, will deliver a public lecture on “The University as Locus of Visibility”. The lecture is based on a paper to be published shortly in “The Yearbook on History and Interpretation of Phenomenology 2017”. It addresses the phenomenon of “occupation” in public universities in Brazil, and indicates how a discussion on technology is unavoidable when agency is expressed as occupation, and when strategies of resistance and visibility rely upon technology. By providing a description of the phenomenon, the lecture also seeks to set out possibilities about a new role for universities in contemporary societies.

Conference speaker: Roberto Wu is Professor of Philosophy at Federal University of Santa Catarina (UFSC), Brazil, and currently Director of the Graduate Program of Philosophy. He is the organizer of the Hermeneia International Symposium and has published several articles in the areas of hermeneutics, phenomenology, rhetoric, and philosophy of art. Much of his research deals with the work of Heidegger, Gadamer, Husserl, Ingarden, Levinas, Aristotle, and Dostoevsky.

Some of the papers are on academia (https://ufsc.academia.edu/RobertoWu).
